Ways To Avoid Freezing Pipes During Freezing Weather

Freezing temperatures bring a whole new set of potential problems for property owners. One problem that may be very pricy is ruptured pipes. The following are several ways to avoid freezing pipes during freezing weather.

Why Do Pipes Burst?

Within pipes, freezing may form a blockage. When water freezes, it expands. You may have witnessed this with things stored in the freezer. The blockage may cause extensive pressure along the line as it continues to freeze. Pipes do not always erupt at the point of the freeze. It may take place at a different pressure point, usually at your faucets. The damage might occur within walls or even within your rooms.

Ways To Avoid Freezing Pipes During Freezing Weather

There are pipes running in many areas of your property and each may need a slightly different treatment..

Outdoor Faucets

For pipes leading to the exterior, such as ones for your spigots, you can shut down the water source and empty the lines. Given these will be untouched during winter months, it is a good idea to winterize the lines.

Interior Pipes

For other areas of your property, there are a few things you may do. First, look into covering the pipes with a foam rubber available at the local hardware retailer. This is especially easy to install on pipes in unfinished basements. Pipes within the upper levels of a home may also break. Try to keep your heat on at all times. The cost of damages caused by a bursting pipe will definitely be more than the expense for heating the home.

Specific Advice for Subzero Temperatures

Below zero temperatures warrant some special precautions. First and foremost, keep your heat set at the normal temperature even when you are not home. Second, leave the kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors open to enable heat to reach your pipes more easily. Lastly, you may allow your faucet to drip slightly. This allows any pressure to escape.

Simple Methods to Prevent Bursting Pipes Go a Long Way

Frozen pipes may result in a lot of damage, particularly when it is undetected for periods of time. It is definitely worth the price and time to proactively address the situation by observing these ways to avoid freezing pipes during freezing weather. Remember to check with your homeowners insurance company to determine if you are covered if your pipes fail and produces damage to your home.
